The Lotus Elise marks Lotus' revival in the small sports car category of the 1990s.  The Elise is a lightweight sports car equipped with a mid-engine with rear-wheel drive.
Production of the Elise was stopped in December 2021 after 26 years and 35,124 examples sold.
The Elise uses an epoxy-bonded and baked aluminum chassis, which is a world first. The bare Elise chassis weighs just 65kg. The suspension elements are also made of aluminum. The Elise was accepted by the English services in September 1995. It was launched at the 1995 Frankfurt Motor Show and then presented at the 1996 Paris Motor Show.
The marketing of the Elise began in 1996. Thanks to its very light weight of 725 kg, the Elise is capable of going from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.8 seconds despite a 120 hp engine. This lightness also improves braking, cornering and fuel consumption.
