The Lotus Elise was introduced in 1996 as an ultra-light roadster embodying Lotus' historic philosophy: light is right.
It is based on:

- a bonded aluminium chassis, revolutionary at the time of its launch;
- a composite body;
- a mid-engine;
- an extreme quest for agility and lightness.

The Elise quickly became an iconic model for the brand, combining efficiency, purity and accessibility compared to the more extreme models (Exige, 340R, 2-Eleven).

The Series 2 (S2) was launched in 2000, with several major developments:

- improved aluminium chassis (stiffer, compatible with stricter crash standards);
- modernised design;
- better ergonomics;
- superior finishes.

The Rover-engined Elise S2s represent:

- the lightest models in the line;
- the models closest to the original Elise philosophy;
- the last Lotus cars to use Rover engines before the transition to Toyota engines (from 2004–2005 depending on market and version).

They are now sought after for their pure character, their sound, and a more analogue experience than subsequent generations.
